QED Links DSM and another European Industrial Giant

A DSM engineer browsing the technology needs posted on QED's yet2.com marketplace web site triggered the introduction that has supplied DSM's specialized extrusion technology to another European industrial giant. DSM is a world-leading producer of life-science products, performance materials, and industrial chemicals. It is based in the Netherlands.

“DSM produces a line of mini extruders,” said Ralph Marx, Licensing Manager for DSM Venturing & Business Development. “None of our off-the-shelf products were appropriate for the specific issues raised by the TechNeed that we found posted on yet2.com. However, because we have substantial experience in this area, we had expertise in house to supply a custom solution that has proven to be exactly what the other organization needed.”

“This is a powerful illustration of the results that can be achieved when a company posts a technology need on yet2.com,” commented Phil Stern, CEO of QED, which operates the yet2.com Marketplace. “Although we have access to almost half the world's technology, not all of it can be posted on the Marketplace as available for license. A TechNeed can elicit unpublished expertise and technology that a company might otherwise be unable to find.”

Extrusion in small quantities

The company to whose need DSM responded was looking for a small scale system to investigate polymer films. Extrusion experiments usually require kilograms of material. DSM's extrusion expertise allowed the other company to run their experiments using only tens of grams of material. The reduction in material requirements by two orders of magnitude will allow significantly lower risk and much more rapid prototype development.

Quick turnaround is a hallmark of licensing deals initiated from technology need postings. A company publicizing its technology need is in a position to act immediately when contacted by solution providers. DSM concluded this licensing deal within six months. Traditionally, licensing deals take as long as 18-24 months.

Thousands of technology needs and licensable technologies are listed on the yet2.com marketplace by companies large and small. yet2.com has facilitated thousands of introductions of the type that lead to the DSM licensing deal.

About DSM

DSM is active worldwide in life science products, performance materials and industrial chemicals. The group has annual sales (pro forma including the recently acquired DNP business) of around EUR 8 billion and employs about 25,500 people across the world. DSM ranks among the global leaders in many of its fields. The company's strategic aim is to grow its sales – partly through acquisitions - to a level of approximately EUR 10 billion by 2005.

By that time specialties, i.e. advanced chemical and biotechnological products for the life science industry and performance materials should generate at least 80% of sales. This strategy represents a continuation of the company's ongoing transformation and concentration on global leadership positions in high-added-value activities characterized by high growth and more stable profit levels.
