QED acquires creator of Dolly the sheep
QED Intellectual Property Limited (QED) is delighted to announce
that its parent company, Innovation Development Limited, has agreed
to acquire PPL Therapeutics plc (PPL), a leader in the transgenic
production of human proteins and the company that helped to clone
Dolly the sheep.
PPL, based in Edinburgh Scotland, was set up in 1987 to commercialise
the production of proteins using transgenic technology – a
process that had been developed by the Animal Breeding Research
Organisation, now the Roslin Institute in Scotland. In 1996, PPL
began human clinical trials of a new treatment for hereditary emphysema
and cystic fibrosis and was also famously involved in the transgenic
research that resulted in the cloning of Dolly the sheep. Further
information on PPL can be found at ppl-therapeutics.com.
More recently, the company has been involved in the development
of Fibrin I, a widely used surgical sealant and haemostatic agent
that is used to stop bleeding during surgery or to seal tissue such
as lung in order to prevent fluid or air leaks.
QED is a specialist intellectual property and know-how licensing
company and will use its expertise and resources to achieve the
best value for PPL’s remaining IP.
